How to use your phone's motion data/physical activity in determining a Drive

Why is Motion Data/Physical Activity used?

During drive detection, MileIQ uses motion data to reduce situations where a single long drive is inaccurately split into multiple shorter ones.  Additionally, it helps in accurately figuring out when trips are completed.

When you enable Motion Data and Physical Activity, MileIQ gains access to your motion data, which increases drive detection accuracy,  and reduces the number of incorrectly captured activities, such as walks and bike rides.

If you need to, you can pause automatic drive detection.

Managing Motion Data (iPhone)

Upon opening the MileIQ app, you will be prompted to enable Motion Data, if it isn't already. Please note, this must be done from the app as it is not adjustable from the web dashboard. Simply tap on the Enable Now button to be taken to your device settings.

If you’re not able to toggle on Motion & Fitness within the app settings, Motion & Fitness most likely is not activated on your iPhone. To resolve this, follow these steps:

Why is it necessary to grant access to Motion and Fitness Tracking, as well as to set the location to "Always"? (iOS)

To detect your drives even when the app is not in the foreground, the “Always” permission for location is required. This permission is essential for automatic and accurate drive detection and tracking.

You may see the iOS prompt: 'MileIQ Has Been Using Your Location In The Background. Do You Want to Continue Allowing This?' To ensure drive detection, choose 'Continue.' Selecting 'Don't Allow' will disable location services, causing missed drives.

⚠️ Important - Starting with iOS 16.4, Apple has changed the way 3rd party apps work with location services. As a result, we updated our app to capture location updates more precisely. Motion data is now required in order to accurately detect drives.

Managing Physical Activity (Android)

Upon opening the MileIQ app, you will be prompted to enable Physical Activity, if it isn't already. Please note, this must be done from the app as it is not adjustable from the web dashboard. Simply tap Fix in Settings to be taken to your device settings for MileIQ.
